When our Lord said, “suffer the little children to come unto me and forbid them not,” the Master was talking to His own disciples. How can this be that men of the church would forbid little children to approach our Lord? What could these men have been thinking? What in the world is anybody thinking that would actually prevent a child from coming to Jesus? In Matthew 18:6, “whosoever offends one of these little ones which believe in me, it would be better for him that a millstone were hung around his neck and drowned in the sea.” For our Lord to say that if our actions offend a little one that believes in Him, that iw would be better for that one to be drowned in the sea - if we were to actually preach this to ourselves, most of use would be headed for the salty sea I would surmise. Are we encouraging the little ones with our actions? Are you offending the little ones with your display of character? If it is correct, and our actions offend the little ones, then the actions of our children reflect both our training of them as well as the direction in life that we have pointed and encouraged the little ones to take. Perhaps this displays the moral malaise that seems to have overtaken us. Nothing really seems to offend us anymore, even the most offensive. Our children have grown up in a day when having a baby is as much an option as what color should my car be and when do I believe it will be convenient to afford. Sounds like just another piece of property. Now of course, the option to not have the little one can also be exercised if the time is not convenient or the mistake needs to be covered up so as not to expose the sin or be forced in another decision that may not be convenient. What is going to be the reaction or response from the one who spoke the words, “Suffer the little children to come unto me and forbid them not?” Would he agree with the word “choice” as an option to the ones that decide they don’t want the blessing that they have been entrusted to by the living God of Heaven. Psalms 127:3, “Lo, children are a heritage of the Lord, and the Fruit of the womb is His reward.” As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man, so are children of the youth. Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them: they shall not be ashamed, but they shall speak with the enemies in the gate.” How many in these last two generations are really excited to have a quiver full? How many even want to? But of course we are the new generation that the particulars of the Word of God do not really apply to. If we were to go back to that antiquated thought proposed in the Bible, we would be doing without almost all of our conveniences and it would be impractical for moms to work and have careers. How ridiculous! People raising more than 1 or 2, possibly 3, but I am not going to allow anymore than that many children into my life. They cost too much and would drive me crazy. Perhaps then God was wrong. Those crumb snatchers are not really a blessing from God. They are an expense; an impediment to some mother’s possible carreers and interfere with dad and his other interests besides work. Perhaps it really is ecclesiastically irrational to suppose that God would actually provide for the children if we were to have them and suffer them to come unto Him. No wonder the church doesn’t seem outraged at the thought of children actually being ripped apart alive from their mother’s womb. No wonder we just accept it as part of the way things are today. It is another option on the shelf of life that people can make if the child would be an inconvenience. Why have we come so far from the large family? Now it is looked down on by society. The opposite of being blessed, but actually a sign of ignorance or the lack of common sense.Don’t you know what is causing those babies fella? It is now a shame to have large families. How far have we come as a church and a society when killing a baby is a better option than giving them up for adoption? We seem so far from “suffer the little children.” |
